Tech abuse or otherwise known as digital abuse involves the deliberate utilisation of digital technology and devices to manipulate, control, threaten, or cause harm to individuals. It encompasses various detrimental and negative behaviours carried out through digital devices, networks, or services.

At Haris Law Solicitors, we wholeheartedly recognise the seriousness of tech abuse and the profound impact it has on survivors. Perpetrators of tech abuse can be partners, ex-partners, family members, friends, colleagues, or even unknown individuals.

Tech abuse often intersects with other forms of abuse, including physical violence, economic abuse, coercive control, and sexual abuse. It is worth noting that the Domestic Abuse Bill 2021 offers legal protections for witnesses and survivors of domestic abuse, even if it doesn’t explicitly mention “tech abuse.” The legislation addresses the underlying behaviours rather than solely focusing on the tools and resources used to carry out the abuse.

In the context of tech abuse, digital devices and technology are misused or exploited to exert control over survivors. This can involve exclusion, harassment, stalking, intimidation, and degradation.

Perpetrators may gain unauthorised access to their partner’s devices, install spyware or tracking software, and secretly monitor and collect personal information such as messages, call history, photographs, and location data.

Abusers also take advantage of social media platforms by creating fake profiles to impersonate victims, posting degrading or damaging content, and harassing both victims and their connections.

Additionally, tech abuse extends to cyberstalking, using technology for surveillance purposes, and sharing intimate or sexual images without consent, commonly known as revenge porn.

Survivors of tech abuse face significant challenges, as technology provides abusers with tools to inflict harm. It is crucial for survivors to seek support and take steps to enhance their online safety and secure their digital devices and accounts. Haris Law Solicitors is committed to assisting survivors of tech abuse by providing legal guidance, protection, and resources to help them navigate these complex situations.
